Why this matters
The will copy, the policy numbers, the logins, the note you meant to write down. Most of it still lives only with you. The people you love deserve a clear next step.
Will copies, insurance policies, logins, and notes stay where only you can find them.
Without a clear handoff, loved ones piece things together from drawers, inboxes, and half-remembered clues.
Hard days get easier when document copies, notes, and access are already chosen.
Leave what they need. Check in on your schedule. After the waiting period, only the contacts you name can claim.
The difference
Without a plan, people inherit locked phones and missing papers. With HeirVault, they claim what you left when you can't hand it over.
We do not draft wills. You can store will copies, policies, docs, logins, bank details, and files encrypted until claim.
How it works
One path from what you leave to the contacts you name.
End-to-end encrypted
Docs, logins, bank details, and files encrypt before upload.

Nothing readable
Encrypted in your browser before anything is stored
Protected by end-to-end encryption. Your live vault is zero-knowledge and encrypts in your browser before upload.
The questions people ask
The same facts as the help center, in one place on the homepage.
HeirVault detects missed check-ins, not life events. You pick how often to check in. Miss that window and a waiting period starts before anything is released.
You get reminders before the deadline and during the waiting period. One sign-in cancels everything. Your contacts are not emailed while the waiting period is still running.
So a breach of HeirVault cannot open your live vault. Encryption happens in your browser before upload. We store ciphertext. The risk that remains is someone who has your passphrase, which is why passkeys, auto-lock, and login history exist.
What you can leave
More than a single message. Clearer than a shared drive. Every file is set aside for the contacts you name, ready for the day you cannot hand it over yourself.
Notes, final messages, and instructions they can act on.
Accounts, passwords, and 2FA codes stored for release handoff, not autofill.
Account numbers, routing details, and card fields ready for the contacts you name.
Seed phrases and wallet recovery details for a claim handoff, not daily trading.
API keys and SSH keys your beneficiaries may need when you cannot hand them over.
Inventories, account maps, and practical lists for beneficiaries.
Memories and messages in your own voice, set aside for the contacts you name.
PDFs, will copies, policies, and other legal document scans.
Structured credentials
Structured credential files keep fields organized, with a built-in generator for strong passwords and PINs. Logins can carry a 2FA (TOTP) secret so the contact you name gets working verification codes, not a locked account. Add custom sections when a template is not enough.
We store will and legal document copies. We do not draft wills.

Why they can trust it
Your live vault encrypts in your browser before upload. That means it is zero-knowledge: HeirVault stores ciphertext and cannot decrypt your live vault. Check-in rules still decide when named contacts can claim.
End-to-end and zero-knowledge
Docs, logins, bank details, spreadsheets, and files encrypt on your device before they reach HeirVault, so we only ever store ciphertext we cannot read.
You hold the keys
Your passphrase unlocks encryption locally. Cleartext stays on your device.
You choose who gets access
Only named beneficiaries get a claim path for what you set aside. Delivery mode decides who can hold that handoff key.

Yes. Check-ins and the waiting period are dead man's switch mechanics. HeirVault builds that around docs, passwords, document copies, and files beneficiaries claim after release rules are met. Your live vault is protected by end-to-end, zero-knowledge encryption. That means HeirVault stores ciphertext and cannot decrypt it. See Alternatives for other dead man's switch tools, or the high-risk contingency handoffs page if that framing fits your situation.
HeirVault does not detect death or contact authorities. It detects missed check-ins: absence on the schedule you set. You choose how often to check in. If you miss one, a waiting period starts with email notices so you can stop release with a single check-in. Only after that waiting period ends without a check-in can beneficiaries begin to claim what you designated. Longer walkthrough: /blog/dead-mans-switch-explained.
Docs, logins with 2FA (TOTP) codes, bank accounts, cards, crypto wallets, API and SSH keys, spreadsheets, notes, step-by-step instructions, house codes, account context, and files for contacts you name, including copies of wills, insurance policies, and other legal documents you already have. They claim what you set aside when you cannot hand things over. Keep daily autofill logins in a password manager. We store those copies under end-to-end encryption until claim. We do not draft wills or give legal advice.
If something happens and you miss check-ins past the waiting period (14 days on Free; 7 to 14 on Pro; 1 to 14 on Shield), they can claim what you set aside. Until then, designated content stays protected by end-to-end encryption.
When release starts, they get a unique claim link by email and create or sign in to an account. Depending on delivery mode, HeirVault assists with the handoff key, they use an enrolled account key, or they enter a beneficiary passphrase you shared. Contents decrypt in their browser.
No. HeirVault does not draft wills, create trusts, or give legal advice. You can store encrypted copies of a will, insurance policies, and other documents you already have, plus instructions, for contacts you name. See the Alternatives page for how we differ from will and estate apps.
